Southern Baptist Convention 09, Part 2

gcr1One of the significanct actions which took place the 2009 SBC  was the passing of a motion to appoint Convention President Johnny Hunt to create and select a Great Commission Task Force to investigate how Southern Baptist Churches can better steward our resources to more effectively fulfill the Great Commission.

There are many within the convention who believe we are not maximizing Southern Baptist resources and we need Southern Baptist leadership to positively influence Southern Baptists in different sectors to embrace a needed change (I will speak to what I think should change later).  The task force will bring forth its recommendations to the 2010 Convention in Orlando.

It is important to understand that the task force can only recommend change.  Messengers at national conventions can bring change to national entities.  Changes, though need to come to State Conventions and Local Associations.  One item which many Southern Baptists would like to see changed is the Cooperative Program allocation at the state level changed (I’ll talk about this more later).  But in order for this to happen, Southern Baptists within each state at their annual state conventions will have to vote to change the formulas.  This effort will be more difficult than merely getting a motion passed at the SBC.

This Great Commission Task Force is rooted in the effort of Daniel Akin’s call for a Great Commission Resurgence.  You can find many resources about this call through the previous link including the document.  Many of us desire to see structural change come to the SBC life, but at the heart of this document is a call for Southern Baptists to fix their eyes on Jesus and follow his command to take make disciples of Jesus Christ from all nations.

Southern Baptist Convention 09, Part 1

2009%20LOVELOUD_FINAL%201The 2009 Southern Baptist Covention in Louisville makes my third convention attended as a messenger.  I attended previous conventions hosted in Greensboro 06 and San Antonio 07.  I left this convention more optimistic about the future of the SBC.  But vastly more important for my ministry as a local church pastor is the way my heart is now aflame for fulfilling the Great Commission.

If I could point to one single moment at the convention that so captured my soul, it was the sermon preached by David Platt at the Pastor’s Conference on Monday.  All I could do was pray that God would give me a brokeness for the lost and that God would continually burden my soul non-Christians.

Specifically, this message has spurred me to lead the local church I pastor to think more about what we can do to reach the lost by giving more money to the cause, become involved in church planting, and by implementing annual international mission trips.

The story Daniel Akin, President of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, told about the 12 and 13 year old girls prostituting themselves in Thailand along with those spoken by Platt have me disastified with my own personal efforts to make Jesus Christ known.  God has given me 31 years and I have wasted so much of it.  I do not want to waste anymore of it.  I do not know how many more God will grant.

I hope the sermon will be eventually made available for free, but for know if you desire to hear the Platt sermon, you can order the DVD or CD for $9.oo.  It’s worth the price and then some.

All Things Southern Baptist

Here are some articles and blog entries relating to Southern Baptists in particular:

1. The IMB announced an immediate suspension of all international missionaries through the International Service Corps and Masters programs…This is related to a previous post I wrote concerning a change of Cooperative Program percentages is needed echoing the call Paul Chitwood made this past week.

There have been many good posts regarding this very issue over the last several days.  See Tom Ascol and Alvin Reid .

2. Steven McKinion writes part 3 of his thoughts concerning generational issues pertaining to the Southern Baptist Convention.  Once again, this is really helpful stuff.  Check the previous two: part 1 and part 2.

3. Dr. Daniel Akin recently published a document recommending actions which would help steer the SBC ship towards gospel sailing called the Great Commission Resurgence.  I hope in part this resurgence might lead to some answers and change reagrding the IMB suspensions referred to earlier.

I am looking forward to hearing from the Convention Floor concerning these issues later this month.
