God’s Unconditional Love?

20 Apr

I see Christians post often that God’s love is unconditional. Yet, Christians who read their Bibles ought to know better than to make such a sweeping statement. In fact the Bible teaches that God’s saving love is completely conditional. First, it is conditioned upon the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without the work of Jesus Christ, there is no saving love. Second, God’s saving love is completely conditional upon our response to the work of Christ. We must repent and believe in Jesus Christ in order to enter into that love.

Richard Sibbes rightly said about the sinner, “Outside of Christ, God is terrible.” Sibbes was not saying that God is not just, he was just saying that outside of Jesus Christ, the sinner’s life will be characterized almost only by wrath.
