This (see title) is the question that I have wondered about myself after preparing and preaching last Sunday’s message from Acts 19. The Apostle Paul was proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ in Ephesus, and God was granting unusual and wonderful miracles through his public ministry. Among those miracles was his ability to exorcise evil spirits.
Seven Jewish itenerant exorcists tried to capitalize upon this ministry by using the names of Jesus and Paul in an attempt to channel this power, but it did not work. The liberating power of the gospel was no magic incantation. And upon their attempt to exorcise a demon, the demon said this back to them, “Jesus I know and Paul I recognize, but who are you?”
The demon knew the work of Jesus. The demon knew the work of Paul. But he did not know the seven sons of Sceva. And so he whipped them and sent them away wounded and naked.
Ask yourself this question. I am living in such a way that demons know my name?
